Fight Voter Suppression in Georgia

Last week, the GOP candidate for Governor in Georgia, also the Secretary of State, threw approximately 53,000 voters off the polls, 80% of whom are people of color. This was a blatant attempt to prevent Stacy Abrams from being the first black female Governor.  In another attempt, officials in Georgia blockaded a bus of 40 black seniors trying to cast their early vote with bogus claims (article).

In response to the blatant racially biased voter suppression, our amazing member Deborah H. and her daughter have decided to fly to Georgia to protect the rights of voters through Nov 6th.

Why is this so bad right now? In 2013, the Supreme Court overturned a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights act that ensured states with a history of voting suppression provided every citizen, regardless of their race, an equal opportunity to participate in our great democracy (read more about this here). States such as Georgia and North Dakota are now are free to disenfranchise African Americans, Native Americans, and other people of color.

How does this affect me here in New York State? GOP control of State Houses controls redistricting (aka gerrymandering) which in turn prevents Democratic Congressional seats. Our own 37th State Senate District is an example of a gerrymandered district, drawn up to favor Republicans. That was why we had to work even harder to ensure a win for Shelley Mayer this past April. These practices affect every US resident, and should augment your concern, as a patriotic resister, who wants EVERYONE to exercise their right vote.

How do I help? We can only resist this by encouraging voter turnout and protecting the vote from the current early voting stage through November 6. Here is how you can fight voter suppression and support the people of Georgia and all Americans:

  • Travel to Georgia with Deborah to directly work to protect the polls or serve on staff hotlines:  If you can travel, please review the intake form. Please contact us at info@indivisiblenewrochelle.org if you have any questions, including financial concerns.

  • Donate to Stacey Abrams campaign. Here is the link for Stacey Abrams and the Blue Wave Project .

  • Educate yourself on the active voter suppression, talk with friends and family to help them understand what's happening and amplify the message on your social media. This this is now we stopped the closure of Georgia polling places proposed last month.  This article provides an excellent overview

The following articles show we are in good company:
